The Basin is a countryside cabin like no other. Located in Victoria in the heart of the Australian bush, this chic country retreat provides an idyllic spot for a tranquil escape. It’s one thing being surrounded by nature, but The Basin goes a step further. Using innovative design concepts and materials, landscape designer Philip Johnson has created a unique cabin, which actively integrates into the environment. This secluded sanctuary offers an authentic, rustic bush experience with dazzling views.
Key design elements: Choosing the right materials
A country cottage in the Australian bush poses unique challenges to designers, builders and developers. The aim is to celebrate and enjoy the surroundings as much as possible while ensuring that the residence is protected and sheltered from the elements. When choosing materials, it’s crucial to achieve the right aesthetics while making sure that the building is functional and built to last.
One of the key design elements of The Basin is the Millboard decking, which has been used to create an authentic aesthetic and build structures that can withstand the elements. Weathered oak was the perfect selection for this project due to its rustic look. Millboard composite decking is durable, safe and hard-wearing and it requires minimal maintenance.Â
