Nature seamlessly integrated with this beautiful Victorian countryside cabin

The Basin Countryside Cabin
Introducing The Basin, Victoria

The Basin is a countryside cabin like no other. Located in Victoria in the heart of the Australian bush, this chic country retreat provides an idyllic spot for a tranquil escape. It’s one thing being surrounded by nature, but The Basin goes a step further. Using innovative design concepts and materials, landscape designer Philip Johnson has created a unique cabin, which actively integrates into the environment. This secluded sanctuary offers an authentic, rustic bush experience with dazzling views.

Key design elements: Choosing the right materials

A country cottage in the Australian bush poses unique challenges to designers, builders and developers. The aim is to celebrate and enjoy the surroundings as much as possible while ensuring that the residence is protected and sheltered from the elements. When choosing materials, it’s crucial to achieve the right aesthetics while making sure that the building is functional and built to last.

One of the key design elements of The Basin is the Millboard decking, which has been used to create an authentic aesthetic and build structures that can withstand the elements. Weathered oak was the perfect selection for this project due to its rustic look. Millboard composite decking is durable, safe and hard-wearing and it requires minimal maintenance.

A closer look at weathered oak vintage Millboard decking

When designing a country cabin that fits seamlessly into the Victorian bush, there is no better option than Weathered Oak Vintage Millboard decking. Millboard decking is a modern, innovative material, which offers the best of both worlds. It looks incredibly lifelike, bringing a natural feel to any building, but it is also durable, weather-resistant and easy to maintain.

Weathered Vintage Oak suited The Basin perfectly due to its bold, earthy tones and character, which are influenced by old railway sleepers. The deck, which wraps around the cabin, has an aged aesthetic, which adds charm while ensuring that the building integrates into nature effortlessly.

Vintage Oak decking is a popular choice for traditional country residences and boltholes, but it also works perfectly for urban developments that combine old and new design elements and concepts and outdoor spaces from gardens to forest retreats.

Installed by Leisure Decking, the deck’s raw, natural vintage hues blend seamlessly with the surroundings, celebrating the native Australian plants and shrubs. Visitors can take advantage of panoramic vistas from several spots, including the stunning deck.

An idyllic base for a restful retreat

The goal for The Basin was to design a restful countryside retreat, which not only maximised views of nature but became part of the landscape. Offering an idyllic base for a weekend away or an escape from the hustle and bustle, The Basin is a beautiful place to rest, recharge the batteries, embrace the tranquillity and mystique of the bush and take in sensational vistas.
